Poker is a game of chance played with a standard pack of 52 cards. The object of the game is to get a hand that beats the other players. It can be played by two or more people, or in teams of five. A poker hand is a combination of five cards, grouped in five categories. The highest possible hand is five of a kind. In the modern era, the most popular form of poker is Texas Hold’em. It is a stud-like game that is played with two hole cards and one final facedown card. Players have the option to check, raise, or fold. If all the players call, the pot is split between them.

In the first round of betting, each player gets a single card face down. This is called the flop. After this, the dealer shuffles the cards. Another round of betting follows, but this time the flop is reshuffled and another set of three facedown cards is dealt. Finally, the showdown takes place.

Unlike other games of chance, poker gains a bit of a psychological edge by having the players wager into the pot. Each player is required to put in a certain amount of chips in the pot, called an ante. Once the ante is in place, the player who put in the bet is considered the active player.

There are many variants of the game. Aside from the usual draw and stud games, some use multiple packs or play with wild cards. One of the more popular is the Five Card Stud. Two of the cards, the hole cards, are dealt face down, while the last card is face up. Traditionally, a maximum limit is placed on the amount of money that can be bet, but in some games, the limits are not fixed.

Other games include draw poker, which is similar to stud but with a different set of rules. A draw poker pot is twice as large as the stud pot. Similarly, a deuce-wild game uses deuces instead of wild cards.

Another notable feature of poker is the betting interval. After each round of dealing, players have an interval of time to match the latest bet or to make their own. At this point, the turn passes to the next player. Most games also allow players to shuffle the cards after each hand, so they are not completely stacked.
